Before the Blair Witch arrived on the scene, the movie women of the Craft weren’t so concerned with outright terror. Hair, men, sucking the life out of little children and menopause were all on the list of worries. On this Halloween night, leave the scares and screams aside for a little fun and girly mayhem. With your best gals gathered in your lounge, these three unforgettable witchy flicks will bring back the laughs and thrills to your All Hallows Eve fest: The Craft, The Witches of Eastwick and Hocus Pocus.
Plot synopsis When Sarah Bailey, a sixteen-year-old teenager with a history of suicidal leanings and strange hallucinations, moves to Los Angeles in search of a fresh start with her father and new stepmother, she meets three fellow misfits (nicknamed ‘the Bitches of Eastwick’) destined to help her unleash her inner witch. Together with Nancy the goth leader, Bonnie the introverted burn victim and Rochelle the racial outcast, Sarah becomes a spell-casting, shoplifting force of nature at the girls’ snotty Catholic school. As the troupe becomes more powerful, using spells to improve their lives and wreak vengeance on their enemies, Sarah starts to grow apart from her new friends. Soon, they become her biggest adversaries. These teenage witches are about to learn that everything comes with a price. Review MTV Generation kids will remember this popular teen angst film of the mid 90s. Combine snazzy special effects, a dash of neo-pagan beliefs and a nod to cool gothic fashion and you’ve got yourself a cheesy thriller about non-conformity, girl power and, of course, the cycle of karma. Although all the would-be witches in the cast were far past their teenage years when filming began, they pull off the drama and uncertainty of high school outcasts with grace. Tunney shines as the sullen beauty, Sarah, just looking for her place in the less-than-friendly crowd, while Balk’s portrayal of the ‘white trash’ rebel with a Wiccan cause gone awry, Nancy, steals the show. Their revenge against the nasty in-kids is sweet and the discovery of new powers is fun to watch. We love the ‘glamour’ spell – hair extensions, color change and eye shadow in an instant. But the world of the craft is governed by karma and, like the boys in Lord of the Flies, these inexperienced gals aren’t quite up to the responsibility. Have you learned your lesson ladies? Despite the overkill of garish special effects in the final battle, this flick is an all-out entertaining ride best mixed with a night of adolescent fun, face masks and maybe even Ouija. ---------------------------> lounge . nourish . host . laze . home . |
