heart to heart
readers share their valentine's day stories
 | 1 2 3 4 5

Last week we asked you, our fabulous readers, for your most memorable Valentine's stories -- and many were kind enough to share. Tales of first love and true love, bad break-ups and special celebrations gone awry. Sad Valentine's Days, happy ones, and unexpectedly inspiring ones as well. Many thanks to everyone who took the time to write in -- and as promised, you'll all be entered into the drawing to win either the I'm with Cupid CD compilation or the Miss Mary/A-lines 7" record. Winners will be chosen at random and notified by email on Friday, February 13th. In the meantime, here are a select few of your stories (we tried to print as many as we could, but sadly, space limitations meant we were unable to include them all). Whether you're celebrating solo, with friends, or with the love of your life this Saturday, we wish all our readers a very happy Valentine's Day!

February 14,1996: I'm 14 years old and a freshman in high school, sitting in science class while the members of student council go around handing out carnations and balloons to the lucky people who have admirers. I just watch since I don't have a boyfriend. But then the girl with the flowers stops in front of my table and looks at me, actually hands me a red carnation and a balloon! At first I think it must be from one of my friends, but the carnation is red, and red equals love. I peek at the card. "To: Missy. From: John K." Now I only know one John K. and he is a very cute, very shy SENIOR. So my friends and I giggle over my flower and balloon all day, wondering what it could mean... after school I find out, when John K. asks me out for that Friday night! I was going to the movies with a senior, and I had never even been on a date before! Needless to say my parents were less than thrilled, but they let me go. My dad gave me a little talk about the minds of seventeen-year-old boys, but it was unnecessary. John K. was a perfect gentleman, and we had a great time. Eight years later we're still having a great time. In fact, by next Valentine's Day, I'll be Missy K.

In 9th grade I was madly in love for the first time, just in time for Valentine's Day. I hyped it up in my head a la Say Anything. I imagined roses delivered to 3rd period, or a serenade at lunch... these were my high school dreams. Instead I got 5 cookie roses in my locker. (Basically huge chocolate chip cookies, crammed on sticks... not a ribbon or rose in sight!) And to make matters worse, my female arch enemy and his best gal pal got the 6th one. I have since toned down my Valentine needs -- and I would love a cookie on a stick!

Having my birthday on Valentine's Day has always been special. My dad would always wait 'till the bakery was just about to close and buy one of their unsold Valentine's cakes. One year was even better than the others because I received a birthday/Valentine's card signed by me! My mom had bought a card, signed her and dad's names and then signed each of my siblings' names one by one -- but forgot to omit me. It was hilarious as she had even tried to forge their signatures, mine included. -- ralphyr
