office space
diary of a home office makeover: part 1
| 1 2 3 4
continued from page 3

Having pared down our furniture, we now had some flexibility in where to put the remaining items. My desk, under the window, would stay where it was, but his desk would be shuffled over to the wall directly behind mine. While this would leave just a little over two and a half feet between the two desks, we figured that as long as we placed our computers at opposite ends of each desk – such that our chairs would be staggered along that narrow space separating the desks – the configuration would work out just fine. (As it turns out, having our backs to each other actually makes the room seem much less cramped – since we can’t see each other, we each feel like we have the room all to ourselves.)

compare with the old floorplan

Moving his desk out of the way would leave a little open nook to the left of my desk … just perfect for housing the futon. As an added, unforeseen bonus, there would be just enough room between the wall and the edge of my desk to allow us to pull open the futon when necessary – instant guest room! A short file cabinet placed right next to the futon could act double duty as an end table. Which still left enough room for us to add a much-needed extra file cabinet.

With new floorplan in hand, we were finally ready to turn this office disaster area into a homey workspace …
