accesorize!
how to add those final decorating touches

Another place where accessories can make a big difference is in shelves, whether the shelves are in a bookcase or in a cabinet such as a corner cabinet or a breakfront. Shelves can look really nice with the addition of some plates, a small Buddha, a beautiful piece of blue glass, or even something wacky like a little bit of taxidermy.
A wooden Buddha statue makes a great bookend.

The thing is to make the shelves looked planned out and not stuffed to the gills with books and papers. For bookshelves, see if you can't find some great bookends at a flea market or use two interesting stones as book ends. You might also try placing a colored glass bowl in the center of the top shelf to break up the books.

A small vintage globe on a small side table creates the perfect balance.
One last note: when you're picking out and collecting your accessories the color is important but so is the scale. You don't want to place a huge ceramic bowl on top of a delicate little table. Nor do you want to put one dinky enameled box atop a big chunky table. Either find a collection of small enameled boxes for the big table-or else use the huge ceramic bowl for the big chunky table and save the dinky box for the top of the little table.

Adding accessories might be one of the last steps in decking out your apartment, but that's no reason to treat it as an afterthought. Follow these tricks of the decorating trade, and you'll be able to create a stylish set of digs that's the envy of all your friends.
