To
buy or not to buy … ah the dilemma
There’s always a bit of a
gamble involved when you spot something you like but feel the price tag
may indicate just a tad more money than you really want to spend. If you
walk away and come back on the next day, chances are good the prices
will be slashed by as much as a half, and even if they aren’t, you
should be able to bargain the original asking price down quite a bit,
since the sellers will be anxious to clear the house out completely. On
the other hand, waiting that extra day could well mean that some other,
more spontaneous secondhand shopper will have already snatched up your
prize, and you’ll be left wishing you’d taken your chance when you
had it (hindsight truly is a curse).
My
basic philosophy is this: if you love it, want it, need it, can’t bear
not to have it, don’t bother to wait till day two on the off chance
that you may get an even better deal. Heck, don’t even wait an extra
fifteen minutes to debate whether you should take the risk, because your
indecision could cost you that beloved chair/coffee table/weird,
abstractly zoomorphic vintage lamp. If, on the other hand, life will
roll along just merrily even if you don’t manage to cart that goodie
home the next day, then go ahead, take the gamble … you have nothing
to lose but a little time out of your weekend.
