7. The great cover-up: self-adhesive cord cover. Granted, it’s not quite as versatile a decorating item as the staple gun or spraypaint, but trust me: in this technology-dependent age in which we live, self-adhesive cord cover is a true decorating essential. Hide messy cords with this fantastic little invention, essentially a white plastic tube that lets you slip your wire inside it, then tack it to the walls, along the floor, the ceiling, wherever. You can cut cord cover to whatever length you desire, paint it to match the walls, and buy L-joints to make your wire run neatly along corners.

8. Roll with it: casters. When was the last time you rearranged a room in your current digs? A full-scale, move-all-the furniture-around rearranging, that is? More likely than not, you put the sofa against the wall and the TV in the corner and the bed by the window when you first moved in … and everything’s pretty much stayed put in the time that’s elapsed since then. TV carts, beds, bookcases … those suckers are heavy, and moving them is just more effort than you, the lazy decorator, are willing to invest, right? That is, unless you’ve had the foresight to attach casters to your furnishings!

9. Grrrrrrrr-ommets! Say it with me now kids: Grommet. Grommet. Grawwww-met! So fun, n’est-ce pas? Grommet is a good word. And grommet kits, available at both hardware stores and fabric stores (though the latter tend to carry nickel-finished grommets in addition to the brass grommets available at the former), are useful little inventions to know about, as they’re an easy and inexpensive way to make finished holes in a wide variety of fabrics, from a light cotton to a heavy canvas to a plastic tarp (though when you’re working with delicate fabrics, you’ll want to reinforce your holes with additional layers of fabric) . Turn that ever-versatile bedsheet into a curtain panel with the addition of some grommets; make a no-sew pillow cover by adding grommets along the edges of two squares of fabric, then binding them together with ribbon; add grommets to your dishtowels to make them easy to hang on a hook.

When you have the right goods in your toolkit, decorating your digs doesn’t have to be a chore!
