chive
This grassy-looking herb, a member of the onion
family, has a mild onion-y flavor. Add chive close to the end of cooking time,
since its flavor is fairly delicate. The hollow-stemmed variety look great in a
garden, as they produce a pretty purple flower (which is actually edible), but
fresh chives are readily available at supermarkets year-round. Chinese chive,
also known as garlic chive, is flat-stemmed, garlicky in flavor, and its flower
buds make for a very tasty stir-fry ingredient.
