asic BAR
| 1 2 3

Maybe you’ve already thrown a party or two in your first, quasi-adult, semi-permanent digs. No doubt you’ve managed, then, to accumulate a few of the true bar essentials. You’ve got your Absolut in the freezer, your Chardonnay in the fridge, a pretty little collection of various bottles – Tanqueray, Cuervo, Bacardi, maybe Kahlua – stashed away in a kitchen cabinet. It’s nothing to rival your favorite swanky bar, of course, but more than adequate to make your basic gin and tonics, margaritas, maybe even a martini if you’re feeling really fancy. Lately, though, haven’t you been feeling a little, well, bored with the same old, same old makeshift mixed drinks you’ve been drinking since your college days? Clearly you’re ready to start expanding your offerings beyond a very basic bar.

The first rule of stocking your home bar: forget about what any so-called bartending expert says; go with what tastes good to you. How to find out what liquors and flavor combinations best appeal to your burgeoning sophisticate’s palate? Experiment with abandon! Avoid the trap of ordering your tired old whiskey sour every time you go out to a bar; ask your host to surprise you with his favorite drink when he offers to whip up a cocktail for you at that chi-chi soiree. You should also invest in a good bartender’s bible -- have fun flipping through the recipes and checking out pictures, then get started mixing those exotic new concoctions in your own home.
