Growing up, it was just another one of those things my mom always seemed to be nagging me to do. As I attempted to scoot out of the house each morning and run off for school, my bed still a jumbled mess of tangled bedsheet and twisted comforter, my mother would call out: Make your bed! Naturally, I saw no point in that particular chore. There were so many important things that needed to be done -- like making sure my hair looked just right and my outfit wasn't one I'd already worn in the last two weeks, or squeezing in that extra couple of minutes of snoozetime. I was only going to mess things up again when I went to sleep that night, so why spend the extra three minutes in the morning pulling blankets taut and tucking sheets neatly? It's one of those sure signs that you're growing up when you realize that all that stuff your mom was always pestering you about? As it turns out, she was right. I'm still not a terribly neat person by nature, but there's one tidying ritual that I have to do before I start each day: make my bed. Unless you're an insomniac, chances are good that your bed's the place in your pad where you spend the most time. (Get your mind out of the gutter, kids.) It's where you wake up each morning, and where you lay your head down each night; it's where you sleep, and snuggle, and dream. So take care of your bed, and it will take care of you.
