Some people are born planners, but alas, neither the boy and I seem to be one of them. This is why each year, we inevitably find ourselves with the same dilemma. Some time during the earlier stretches of February, I look at the calendar and see that little notation for Valentine’s Day printed in small neat type under the day marked 14. So Valentine’s Day is coming up, I’ll casually mention to the boy, then add hopefully, Do we have plans? He’ll glance up sheepishly, look helpless, squeak out a blatantly fibbed, Um, yes? In the past, I’ve listened to him call every restaurant in town in desperate search for the much coveted Valentine’s day dinner reservation. We’ve wrestled with whether 4:30 is a better time than 10:30, with ridiculously early and ridiculously late being the only two time slots left at such short notice; we’ve debated over whether an outdoor table in Tucson in February is risky or not. Inevitably, we’re left eating at a restaurant we don’t even like all that much, or trying to get excited about a meal that occurs at completely the wrong time for our body clocks, or sitting at a drafty dismal table that’s been squeezed in too close to the front door. In short, these Valentine restaurant outings are almost always a bit of a disappointment. Which is why in the last few years, we’ve started skipping the stereotypical schmancy dinner out, and fixing up a special meal chez nous instead. Planning a romantic dinner at home this February 14th? Check out this elegant menu (it’s surprisingly fast to put together too, making it a perfect choice for celebrating with your honey after a long day at work).
