crafty crafty: sweater stockings
by Yee-Fan Sun

continued from page 2

5 If you have a sewing machine, thread up that baby. For each stocking half, sew the toe piece to the main stocking. Use a small straight stitch and leave a 1/8" seam. Go over the seam with a zigzag stitch for extra reinforcement. Check each seam carefully by giving it a firm but gentle tug to make sure that it's properly stitched. (If you're going it by hand, you might want to use a back stitch for extra reinforcement.) If there are any gaps, go over them with additional stitching as necessary.

6 Pin each stocking back to its corresponding half. Sew together each stocking with a straight stitch, leaving the top free for an opening and allowing for a ¼" or so seam. Go slowly around the curved bits, as that machine can get away from you mighty quickly. (Again, use the back stitch if you're sticking with the handsewn method.) As with step 5, go over the seams with a zigzag stitch to given them some added strength, thus allowing you -- er Santa -- to stuff those stockings to the max.

6 Stick your hand in each stocking and turn it right side out. You might discover that some of the rounded sections of your stockings are weirdly angular; you can either accept this as part of the charm of handmade stockings, or go over those sections with a little more stitching until they're smoothed out enough to suit your anal-retentiveness.

You're now the proud owner/creator of a lovely pair of knit stockings. If you want to give them a little more personality, customize them with embroidered letters, bells, ribbons -- whatever your imagination can dream up. You might also consider sewing in a small loop at the top of the stocking, to make it easier to hang. Ribbon works dandy; for my stockings, I braided some yarn I had leftover after stitching on our initials, made a loop, and sewed it in by hand. Of course, if you prefer things simple, you can also skip the bells and whistles and get straight to the fun part -- hanging them up by the fireplace (if you're lucky enough to have one)… and looking forward to the holidays!
